The name alone invokes thoughts of social media delight, it is Sweetcron. I first heard about it through this somewhat amazing FriendFeed thread. Ironically the application feels like a roll your own FriendFeed. If you look at my new homepage, you’ll see I had started to hack something similar (all be it much less elegant). Personally, I’m sick of “renting” space on social networks and aggregators. I can’t help but think this is one step closer to “owning” my social presence.
I’m having a friendly competition with Jackie Peters right now. Our Twitter follower numbers have been oddly mirroring each other recently. Since we are both getting very close to the 1000 mark, I want to ensure that I get there first. For both ego and bragging rights I need your help with this.
So in the tradition of such wonderful (and certainly not gaming services) like Pay Per Post, I want to pay you to follow me. More specifically, pay you to tell your followers to follow me.
So here is the deal:
The first 10 people that twit “You really MUST follow @seanpercival” I will send $10 via paypal.
In order to qualify you must have over 100 followers yourself
After you have posted it, drop me an email (me @ seanpercival dot com), include a link to the twit and include your PayPal email address.
Thanks for playing everyone, more than 10 people have entered and have been paid out. I’ll go back through the Summize feed tonight to make sure I didnt miss anyone. For those curious, I have recieved about 40 new followers from this stunt. Thats a cost of about $2.50 per follower. Someone has opened a Get Satisfaction about this thread expressing some concerns. Really this is all for fun, and in some sense an experment as well. I’ll post more about this when I have a chance.
As announced on their official blog, Google is going to roll out Google Suggest into it’s native search. The feature has been in development through Google Labs since 2004 (no really), by Friday it should be rolled out live to everyone. So what does this mean? Let’s take a look at a few points.
People Kant Spel: Anyone who has done any SEO or analytics work knows just how bad people can’t spell. In fact, the masses are HORRIBLE at using search engines. The “autocompletness” of Google Suggest is going to help millions find the right information.
Suggest for Your Business: Creating content or looking for keywords to SEO your website? Well much like using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Google Suggest is going to be a great resource to find terms.
Death to Typo Squatters: I’ve always thought typo squatting was pretty messy work. This new feature is going to greatly reduce their traffic. While parked domains tend to fall out of Google SERPs, their red headed step child the typo splog usually gets good placement.
I’m learning more about the Russian search engine Π―Π½Π΄Π΅ΠΊΡ through this great piece in the Times Online. It seems much like Chinese Baidu, Google is starting to lose its domination here as well. I love to hear about stories like this because
1) competition in search is good
and
2) new regional based search equals new opportunities
Recently I’ve started to experiment with Chinese SEO for Docstoc, visitors from the region have already increased by around 1000% compared to the month prior.Β I can’t help but think there are some really big missed opportunities for content sites and regional search engine optimization. While everyone in the business likes to say international visitors don’t monetize, traffic (and most importantly traffic growth) can determ the true value of your startup.
Last night we celebrated the birthday of one Nicole Jordan. Well loved in the LA tech community, Nicole booked a private venue for 150 of her closest friends. It was a little too loud and dark to shoot video inside but I did manage to document the rather amusing club exodus.
For us, the night ended locked outside a strangers house in Laurel Canyon followed by grilled cheese. Enjoy.
It’s official, Joe Biden has been selected as the Vice President running mate with Obama. Here are a few background documents on Joe Biden. Click the >> in the top right corner to view these in full screen.
Testing out a new high def video camera, so far looks pretty good. I have noticed it has some trouble focusing, this causes the video to zoom in/out ever so slightly. Probably a setting or lighting issue I’m sure.
I’m using the DXG-595V HD camera by the way. You can’t beat the price, only $200 for a HD camera? Yes please.
