Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face, the open-source AI hub, for $12.9 billion.
The Information reported the deal Wednesday night; Business Insider says the talks value the company above $13 billion and had not yet produced a signed agreement. Hugging Face last raised at $4.5 billion and generates roughly $150 million a year, and late last year it turned down a $500 million Nvidia investment because it did not want one dominant investor swaying its decisions. Problem solved. Nvidia does not sway anything now, it just owns it.

A federal judge blocked the Pentagon from blacklisting Anthropic, calling the move illegal and baseless.
Judge Rita Lin ruled the Defense Department violated the First Amendment when it designated Anthropic a supply chain risk in March, the first U.S. company ever tagged under a statute written for foreign sabotage, after Anthropic refused to allow Claude to be used for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons. Lin noted the Pentagon kept pursuing work with Anthropic after calling it a saboteur, which is the tell. You do not keep booking meetings with the arsonist. An appeal is expected.

Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk on September 30 after 21 years.
It is the microtask marketplace Jeff Bezos once called "artificial artificial intelligence," which connected more than 500,000 humans with the tasks computers could not do; SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI close the same day. Amazon gave no reason, and it may not need one: a 2023 study found up to 46% of Turk workers were already using AI models to finish their human work. The people pretending to be machines got replaced by the machines that had been covering their shifts the whole time.
