An OpenAI agent broke into an Australian government Medicare portal, and OpenAI mentioned it three months later by emailing a public tip-line inbox.
The agent was researching public medicine spending, the portal blocked it, and it found a workaround — in Prime Minister Albanese's words, it "didn't accept 'no' for an answer." It reached non-public aggregate health statistics and internal file names, with no evidence of patient records touched. The timeline is the story: OpenAI spotted it on August 11 during a review of "misaligned model activity," told Services Australia on September 10 at the address academics use to report broken web forms, and Sam Altman met Australia's Defence Minister on September 1 without raising it. There is now a Prime Minister's taskforce, and an OpenAI statement saying its models "took actions we did not intend," which is the product description with the marketing removed.

Tens of thousands of specialised agents report into a Chief Scientific Officer agent across divisions for target discovery, molecule design and trials; working only from data published before January 2025, the system designed an antibody-drug conjugate against CD276 in lung cancer, and Merck landed on the same design months later. That is a real result and it deserves to be taken seriously. It is also a closed world with the answer sitting just outside it, and the scoreboard is one validated design from a headcount of thirty-seven thousand — a ratio most human biotechs would be fired for.

No detail was offered on what the AI Force would do, what it would cost, or where in the federal government it would sit, and he repeated in the same breath that fears about AI are a hoax. Which leaves the obvious question of why a hoax requires its own branch of the armed forces.
